The Fluid Mechanics of Deep-Sea Mining
نویسندگان
چکیده
Fluid mechanics lies at the heart of many physical processes associated with nascent deep-sea mining industry. The evolution and fate sediment plumes that would be produced by seabed activities, which are central to assessment environmental impact, entirely determined transport processes. These processes, include advection, turbulent mixing, buoyancy, differential particle settling, flocculation, operate a multitude spatiotemporal scales. A combination historical recent efforts combine theory, numerical modeling, laboratory experiments, field trials has yielded significant progress, including assessing role operational parameters in setting extent plumes, but more fundamental applied fluid research is needed before models can accurately predict commercial-scale scenarios. Furthermore, underpins design operation proposed technologies, for there currently no established best practices.

Deep-sea Mining: An Emerging Marine Industry
Deep-sea mining is an emerging marine industry that presents particularly complex challenges due to its multi-faceted technological, scientific, environmental, social, industrial, political, economic and legal aspects, all of which must be addressed to achieve commercially viable results. These aspects are governed by the burgeoning regulatory regime promulgated by the International Seabed Auth...

With increasing demand for mineral resources, extraction of polymetallic sulphides at hydrothermal vents, cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts at seamounts, and polymetallic nodules on abyssal plains may be imminent. Here, we shortly introduce ecosystem characteristics of mining areas, report on recent mining developments, and identify potential stress and disturbances created by mining. We analyz...
متن کاملData Support for Modelling of Deep-Sea Mining Impacts
The paper critically reviews the presently available experimental data from various tests and experiments connected with the deepsea mining issue with regard to their feasibility in supporting and validating the developed numerical models. Numerical modelling is applied mainly to predetermining the plume development and sea oor blanketing caused by various sediment discharges. The paper describ...
متن کاملA New Procedure for Deep Sea Mining Tailings Disposal
Deep sea mining tailings disposal is a new environmental challenge related to water pollution, mineral crust waste handling, and ocean biology. The objective of this paper is to propose a new tailings disposal procedure for the deep sea mining industry. Through comparisons of the tailings disposal methods which exist in on-land mining and the coastal mining fields, a new tailings disposal proce...
